GAUSS Srl is qualified to perform In-Orbit Demonstration/Validation (IOD/IOV) services, thanks to its experience with satellite and launch systems.
Through its orbiting satellites, GAUSS offers the opportunity to test in situ – onboard the managed satellites – both experiments and components (such as electronics, payloads, spacecraft subsystems, vehicles, systems..) as specific payloads.
The above-mentioned tools are flight services that give you the chance to perform advanced experiments via GAUSS satellites launched into Space, providing the actual space (volume to occupy), the necessary energy (to be operative), the communication (ground track/data collection) and the vehicle (the case).
This method of using a satellite as carrier represents an affordable way to place new space products on orbit, as well as innovative technologies that need to be demonstrated once in orbit, before they can become an accepted new space product. In fact, on top of studying the characteristics of a certain item, the main goal of sending a product to be tested onboard is to acquire flight heritage, meaning that the product may then be used for future missions.
In this regard, in 2015/2016 GAUSS participated in the EU project IODISPLay (funded by the European Commission in the framework of the program H2020), where the consortium (composed by GMV, INTA, VVA and GAUSS) had the scope of identifying a portfolio of IOD missions in terms of technologies, platforms and launchers, to ease the access to Space of innovative technologies.
GAUSS had the role of launch broker with the objective of identifying suitable launchers.
IOD missions are low cost and reliable launch opportunities for research and development of innovative products that can benefit from an actual tests in Space.
These flight opportunities can give an added value to your product or service.
In order to host a technology/an experiment, the criteria of suitability of the experiment have to be considered case by case (such as size, weight etc..).
Tests may vary, and they include a wide number of types of experiments, also according to the customer’s objectives.
GAUSS has a long tradition of in-orbit technology testing, due to the experimental nature of all of its missions. For instance:
- Technological tests like in UniSat-5
- Solar panels like in UniSat-6
- Test of electronic hardware and software in orbit
- Cameras and sensors
- Ground segments equipment and procedures
UniSat Platform is a IOD/IOV Carrier.
